The AFA Ute Index™ 2026 - 11-page buyer journey
Best Looking Dual Cab Utes in Australia
We compare front-end design, side profile, rear treatment, wheels, interior presentation, visual balance, aftermarket potential and overall desirability.

What Is the Best Looking Ute in 2026?
The Ford Ranger is our best-looking all-round dual cab because its proportions, front-end design, wheel choices and range of factory styling packages remain the most consistently resolved.
The BYD Shark 6 finishes second. It brings a cleaner, more modern and more premium-looking design than most traditional work utes, with distinctive lighting and well-balanced surfacing. The Volkswagen Amarok takes third as the most polished and premium interpretation of the Ranger platform.

How Do You Score Something as Subjective as Styling?
This is the most subjective page in the Index, so each score is explained rather than presented as a universal truth.
A design can be brave, recognisable and commercially useful while still receiving a polarised public response. Kia Tasman is the clearest example in this field.

Why the Top Three Finished Where They Did
Ford Ranger
Ranger wins because the basic shape works across work grades, Wildtrak, Platinum and Raptor-inspired appearance packages. The body has a strong shoulder line, a well-balanced cabin-to-tub ratio and a front-end identity that looks modern without needing excessive decoration.
Its greatest design strength is adaptability. A clean white work Ranger, a blacked-out Sport, a touring Wildtrak and a modified off-road build can all look convincing without fighting the underlying proportions.
It loses points because the design is now familiar and some factory appearance packs rely heavily on dark trim rather than genuinely new details.
Why it works
- Excellent proportions
- Strong lighting identity
- Works in basic or premium trim
- Large colour and wheel choice
- Accepts tasteful modifications
What cost it points?
- Design is becoming familiar
- Some packs rely on black trim
- Raptor-style modifications are often overused
- Large premium wheels can reduce practicality
- Too many similar-looking builds exist
BYD Shark 6
Shark 6 earns second because it gives the ute segment a genuinely different visual direction without looking like a design experiment. The lighting signature is modern, the body sides are cleaner than most rivals and the overall shape feels more premium SUV than traditional commercial pickup.
The front end has strong road presence without relying on a huge chrome grille, while the interior continues the modern theme with a clean dashboard and large digital displays. It is one of the few utes in the field that looks contemporary before any accessories are added.
It misses first because the aftermarket styling ecosystem remains limited and some traditional ute buyers will prefer the tougher, more mechanical appearance of Ranger, Hilux or D-MAX.
Why it works
- Clean and cohesive design
- Distinctive without looking strange
- Premium front lighting
- Balanced side profile
- Modern interior theme
What cost it points?
- Less traditional ute character
- Smaller modification market
- Future styling longevity is unproven
- Some buyers want a tougher visual theme
- Limited factory appearance variants
Volkswagen Amarok
Amarok takes the strong proportions of the Ranger platform and gives them a more European, premium appearance. The grille, lighting and wheel designs are more restrained, while upper grades have a polished road presence that suits executives and long-distance touring buyers.
It looks expensive without requiring the visual aggression used by some rivals. The cabin continues the premium theme with cleaner trim and more restrained detailing.
It loses points because the design can appear conservative beside the Shark 6 and because some buyers will see too much Ranger in the underlying proportions.
Why it works
- Premium road presence
- Well-designed wheels
- Clean lighting treatment
- Strong interior presentation
- Excellent touring-build potential
What cost it points?
- Conservative beside Shark 6
- Close Ranger relationship is visible
- Chrome-heavy grades divide opinion
- Less aggressive than some buyers want
- Premium styling brings premium pricing
Good-Looking Utes With Different Design Personalities
Tough and familiar
Hilux looks credible in almost any work or touring configuration. It loses freshness points, but its shape remains easy to improve with tasteful accessories.
Strong face, conventional body
The front end has real confidence and focused grades look especially good. The side and rear are more traditional.
Large and expensive-looking
Cannon Alpha has impressive presence and a premium cabin. Its bulk and detailing can feel excessive from some angles.
Distinctive rather than universally attractive
The front design is instantly recognisable and the stance is strong. Some surface details remain polarising.
Clean and mature
BT-50 has one of the tidier front ends, although its body shape remains visibly related to D-MAX.
Solid but not yet memorable
The new generation has useful presence, but its long-term visual identity is still developing.

The Most Polarising Designs in the Field
Bold, distinctive and heavily criticised
Tasman is impossible to mistake for another ute, which deserves credit. However, public reaction to the front-end treatment, headlights and wheel-arch design has been strongly divided. Some buyers admire the confidence, while many simply find it awkward. Its strong performance elsewhere in the Index does not protect it from a lower styling result.
Large without enough visual cohesion
Terron 9 has road presence and substantial dimensions, but its grille, body proportions and detailing do not work together as cleanly as the leaders.
How the Top Five Look Best
Ranger - Blacked-Out Touring Build
Dark factory trim, sensible all-terrain tyres, a restrained canopy or roller shutter and one clean lighting upgrade. Avoid copying a Raptor without the hardware.
Shark 6 - Clean Factory-Plus Build
Keep the modern surfacing visible. A mild wheel and tyre upgrade, dark sports bar and discreet protection suit it better than oversized flares.
Amarok - Premium Touring Build
Smaller premium wheels with more tyre sidewall, colour-matched canopy and understated accessories preserve the expensive appearance.
Hilux - Traditional Work-Tourer
A high-quality tray, integrated toolbox, sensible bullbar and clean suspension setup suit the familiar shape without making it look overdone.
D-MAX - Focused Off-Road Build
All-terrain tyres, modest lift, underbody protection and restrained dark trim make the strong front-end design work even better.

Seven Styling Mistakes Ute Buyers Make
Buying the most chrome because it is top spec
More trim does not automatically create a cleaner or more premium design.
Choosing oversized wheels
Tiny tyre sidewalls can make a ute look less capable and reduce ride quality.
Adding every accessory at once
Too many bars, lights, flares and stickers can destroy the original proportions.
Using cheap wheel-arch flares
Poorly fitted flares often look worse than the standard body and can trap dirt.
Choosing a bullbar that fights the design
A heavy bar can ruin the front-end shape and reduce approach angle.
Copying a flagship appearance without the full build
A basic ute with random Raptor, GR Sport or Black Edition parts rarely looks cohesive.
Ignoring resale colour
Unusual colours can look excellent, but the next buyer may narrow the market.
