Why the Top Three Finished Where They Did
Ford Ranger
Ranger wins because its capability is broad, predictable and available across several useful grades. Four-wheel-drive models combine low range with a rear locking differential, while selected grades add drive modes, full-time four-wheel drive and off-road focused camera views.
Its traction control calibration is one of the strongest parts of the package. The vehicle can continue making progress before the rear lock becomes necessary, which matters on changing surfaces where steering control and momentum are important.
It does not score higher because Ranger is physically large, premium off-road grades become expensive and some versions arrive on wheels and tyres better suited to styling than sharp rocks.

Toyota HiLux

Toyota's remote-area support, accessory availability and long history of suspension and protection development strengthen the real ownership case. A damaged component is easier to source when the vehicle is common across regional Australia.
The standard figures are not spectacular beside some specialist grades. Ground clearance around 216mm on common 4x4 versions is useful rather than outstanding, and standard tyres still determine how much of the chassis capability reaches the ground.

Isuzu D-MAX
D-MAX combines dual-range four-wheel drive, a rear differential lock and Rough Terrain Mode. Selected grades offer up to 240mm ground clearance, while X-Terrain figures include a 30.5-degree approach angle and 23.8-degree ramp-over angle.
Rough Terrain Mode works with the traction control system to help maintain progress when wheels lift or grip changes. The D-MAX Blade goes further with additional clearance, underbody protection and more suitable all-terrain tyres.
It loses points because the departure angle is less impressive than the approach angle on some dual cab configurations, and the standard suspension can feel firm and limited in articulation compared with a carefully modified setup.

Excellent paper specification
X-Pro combines high clearance, low range, automatic rear locker, terrain modes, X-Trek low-speed control and Ground View Monitor. Long-term durability and aftermarket depth are not yet proven.
D-MAX capability with fewer focused options
BT-50 inherits strong Isuzu fundamentals. It remains capable, but does not offer a major off-road advantage over D-MAX and has less factory focus than D-MAX Blade.
Powerful but physically heavy
Terrain systems and power help, but width, mass and long wheelbase work against it on tight tracks, soft sand and crests.
Fast progress on easier terrain
